Report: Granit Xhaka set to return to Premier League with Sunderland

The 32-year-old leaves Bayer Leverkusen two years after departing Arsenal, having helped the German club clinch the Bundesliga title.

Xhaka, who agreed personal terms last week, joins the Black Cats on a three-year deal. Sunderland's initial offer for the experienced midfielder was rejected, but they returned with an improved package, increasing the total by 7 million pounds.

The final agreement includes 13 million up front, with 4 million in performance-related add-ons.

During his time in Germany, Xhaka was a key figure under Xabi Alonso, but uncertainty followed the managerial change at Leverkusen. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was appointed as Alonso's successor but has yet to manage a competitive match.

His delayed communication - reportedly waiting three weeks before speaking with the squad - was not well received. Xhaka, in particular, was left frustrated by the lack of contact and questioned his place in the club's future.

Despite Ten Hag assuring the midfielder he remained part of his plans, Xhaka ultimately opted to depart, marking the Dutchman's first significant outgoing before even taking charge.
