Set 177 to win, Jonny Bairstow and Quinton de Kock were ruthless in their reply, finishing undefeated on 85 (45) and 79 (41) respectively. Sunrisers chased the total in just 14.2 overs, giving them a bonus point victory, which sees them move to the top of the SA 20 table.
But it wasn't a fast start. Bairstow couldn't seem to find the middle of the bat, then de Kock survived two edges that evaded wicketkeeper Shai Hope and a mis-hit that landed safely in the deep.
However, the duo found their groove. They brought up the 100 stand in the tenth over and when spinner Keshav Maharaj came on to bowl his third, Bairstow shifted into top gear. The Englishman whacked five sixes and a four to compile the most expensive over in SA20 history.
From then on, the mood turned belligerent. De Kock also got in on the action, striking two sixes in his last three balls to bring a merciless end to the match.
Earlier, the Capitals started steadily in the Pretoria heat. New Zealand quick Adam Milne was miserly as his opening two overs went for just ten runs. Looking to get a move on, opener Bryce Parsons took on first-change Lutho Sipamla. He smoked for three consecutive boundaries before carving one to Sunrisers captain Tristan Stubbs in the third over.
Milne then got Shai Hope for just five the following over and the Capitals were 35/2. That brought Wihan Lubbe and Connor Esterhuizen set about rebuilding and put on 52 off 33 before all-rounder Lewis Gregory dismissed Lubbe for 21.
Then Nelson (and Anrich Nortje) struck for the Sunrises, leaving the hosts 111/4 with the departure of top scorer Esterhuizen for 52. And when Nortje got shining talent Dewald Brevis out for just 8, the Capitals were hoping to limp to 160 odd.
But Sherfane Rutherford had other ideas. He miscued a few, but ultimately was man-alone at the back and as he pumelled his way to an unbeaten 47 off 22 to give the hosts something to bowl at.
