’I feel very good’ – Quwan Plaatjies reacts to remarkable PSL debut

The 20-year-old Stellies academy graduate scored three times as Stellies secured a 3-1 Betway Premiership victory over Marumo Gallants at Athlone Stadium last Friday.

Plaatjies became the first player in PSL history to score a hat-trick on his top-flight debut, announcing himself in spectacular fashion and immediately moving to the top of the early scoring charts.

The young forward revealed that he was nervous when he first stepped onto the pitch but quickly settled into the match and grew in confidence.

“It feels like a dream come true,” Plaatjies said on Stellenbosch FC’s social media platforms.

“I was nervous when I stepped onto the field. After the game started, I gained confidence and just played my game.”

Plaatjies also reflected on his three goals, explaining how he felt increasingly confident as the match progressed.

“The first one, I already knew I would tuck it in. With the second one, I put my head on it and saw the goal.

“With the third one, I had already seen the goal, and the hat-trick, I can’t believe it.”

The Stellenbosch academy product was quick to acknowledge the role his family has played in his journey, dedicating his memorable performance to those closest to him.

He thanked his mother, grandmother, sister, parents and wider family for their support.

“I feel very good. I don’t have the words to describe it. All I can say is that I feel very good,” he added.

Plaatjies’ remarkable evening also brought a rare smile from coach Gavin Hunt when the youngster was substituted late in the match, underlining the significance of his achievement.

His hat-trick sees him lead the early Betway Premiership scoring charts alongside AmaZulu forward Thando Ngwenya with three goals each.

Stellenbosch will return to league action on August 26 when they travel to face Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium.
