The 29-year-old centre-back has emerged as a key figure under coach Arthur Zwane, making over appearances across all competitions - the most he has featured in a single campaign.
It marks a significant turnaround for Mthethwa, who struggled for minutes during his time at Orlando Pirates and had to rely on loan spells to get regular football.
Reflecting on his resurgence, the defender admitted the opportunity to play consistently has made a major difference to both his confidence and performance levels.
"Personally, I think for me this is one of my greatest seasons. Coming from two seasons where I've not been playing," Mthethwa said, as quoted by iDiski Times.
"I appreciate the opportunity from the chairman and the technical team for trusting me."
Mthethwa highlighted the importance of rhythm and match fitness, noting that regular involvement has allowed him to rediscover his form and continue developing.
"I think I've achieved playing almost 20-plus games this season. I've achieved a lot, but I'm still learning," he added.
While pleased with his individual progress, the defender admitted there is still unfinished business for the team after narrowly missing out on a place in continental competition.
AmaZulu were in contention for a CAF spot but ultimately fell short, something Mthethwa believes can serve as motivation going forward.
"I think next season is one of the goals because we set a standard that we can challenge for that," he said.
Mthethwa will now look to maintain his strong form when AmaZulu face Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
