Antoine Griezmann commits to Atletico Madrid through 2027 with new deal

The new deal extends Griezmann's stay at the club into a 10th season across two spells, having first joined Atletico in 2014. Now 34, the French forward has netted 197 goals, the most in the club's history.

Griezmann's previous contract had been set to expire in 2026, but sources told ESPN that the additional year will allow Atletico to restructure his wage package, easing pressure under La Liga's financial regulations.

While the 2018 World Cup winner has openly expressed interest in finishing his career in Major League Soccer, he appears set to remain in Spain for the foreseeable future. In interviews, Griezmann has called a move to the U.S. an "objective," citing his passion for American sports and lifestyle, but his immediate future remains firmly in Madrid.

Despite a slightly quieter season by his standards - scoring eight goals in 38 La Liga appearances and 16 goals in all competitions - Griezmann remained a central figure in Diego Simeone's setup. Atletico finished third in La Liga, behind champions Real Madrid and runners-up Barcelona.

Griezmann has faced increased competition in recent months, following the arrivals of Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth at the end of last season. Nevertheless, his influence and consistency have made him indispensable in both domestic and European campaigns.

Griezmann's decorated career with Atletico includes a Europa League title (2018), a UEFA Super Cup, and a Spanish Supercopa. However, both La Liga and the Champions League titles remain elusive. He was part of the Atletico side that lost the 2016 Champions League final to Real Madrid and has twice finished second in La Liga.

The forward spent five prolific seasons at the club between 2014 and 2019, before an often turbulent two-year spell at Barcelona. He returned to Atletico initially on loan in 2021, before making the move permanent in 2022.

Now, with his future secured through 2027, Griezmann will have another shot at adding the missing silverware to his Atletico legacy - and further solidifying his status as a club legend.
