The match, played at the King Zwelithini Stadium, saw Usuthu take the lead through Tebogo Mashigo, but the advantage was later cancelled out by Lebohang Nkaki's penalty, leaving both sides to settle for a point.
AmaZulu are currently in sixth place on the log with 34 points from 27 matches. Polokwane City sit just below them in seventh, one point behind, with a game in hand.
"It's tough for everyone. (Friday), we had a golden opportunity to make our lives a little easier - secure the three points and put Polokwane City at a disadvantage in the top-eight race, forcing other teams to battle it out with them," Zwane was quoted by Sportswire.com
Zwane also acknowledged the pressure of their upcoming clash against Orlando Pirates, where even a single point could prove crucial.
"The disadvantage we face is that we've played more games than most of the teams we're competing with. That gives them a strategic edge - if we lose to Pirates, they can use their remaining games to leapfrog us," he explained.
"But that's the nature of football. We only have ourselves to blame. We had many opportunities earlier in the season to put ourselves in a far more comfortable position."
AmaZulu will play their final match of the season at home against Orlando Pirates on May 24.
