Asanele Velebayi vows to improve after underwhelming Kaizer Chiefs campaign

The 23-year-old joined Amakhosi from Cape Town Spurs last season after establishing himself in the Betway Premiership. However, his first campaign with the Soweto giants failed to produce the numbers expected following his move.

Velebayi made 15 appearances across all competitions but failed to score or register an assist. His struggles have continued into the early stages of the current campaign, although he recently provided a glimpse of what he can offer.

After missing the squad for the league opener against Kruger United and the MTN8 quarter-final defeat to Golden Arrows, Velebayi started the 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United.

He was then an unused substitute against Mamelodi Sundowns before making a 14-minute appearance against Richards Bay, where he assisted Siphesihle Ndlovu for Chiefs' equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Velebayi was again left out of the matchday squad for last weekend's 3-2 victory over Siwelele, but remains determined to improve his contribution.

"For me personally, [my target], first of all, is to play as much as possible and help the team, and score as much as I can. If not scoring, I should assist," Velebayi was quoted by FARPost.

Reflecting on his debut season, the winger admitted there is room for improvement as he targets his full potential.

"I'm not entirely happy (with my performance last season), but last season was more (about gaining) experience. So, this season I know I'll be looking to reach my full potential and help the team."

Velebayi is now working under Da Cruz, who took charge before the start of the season, and says the French coach's demanding approach can bring out the best in him.

"The coach is a very demanding coach. That's the positive thing about him. That's what I like about him, that he is a demanding coach. He is always looking for 100 percent," he added.
