Mamelodi Sundowns confirm Thabang Matuludi signing as right-back battle takes shape

The Brazilians announced Matuludi's arrival on Friday afternoon, with the former Polokwane City defender expected to provide cover for injured right-back Khuliso Mudau.

Matuludi's arrival comes just days after Sundowns signed Deano van Rooyen as a free agent, with the former Stellenbosch defender initially brought in to strengthen the position following Mudau's injury.

However, Sundowns subsequently reignited their long-standing interest in Matuludi after his impressive performances for Polokwane City, completing a move that has given head coach Miguel Cardoso arguably the country's strongest collection of right-backs.

Once Mudau returns to full fitness, Sundowns will have three players competing for one position, providing Cardoso with significant depth as the Brazilians prepare to defend their Betway Premiership title while also competing across multiple continental fronts.

The situation could, however, create an interesting dilemma for Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.

With all three players potentially competing for regular minutes at club level, at least two could eventually find themselves in backup roles when everyone is available.

That would be a significant change for Matuludi, who enjoyed consistent football at Polokwane City, while Mudau has established himself as Sundowns' first-choice right-back and an important player for Bafana.

Van Rooyen, meanwhile, arrives with considerable experience and was signed to provide competition and cover in the position.

Sundowns' decision to bring in two high-profile right-backs during the same transfer window has also raised questions about the club's recruitment strategy.

Cardoso has previously made it clear that recruitment falls outside his immediate responsibilities, with Sundowns' scouting department tasked with identifying suitable targets.

For now, Matuludi's signing strengthens Sundowns considerably, but the competition for the right-back position could become one of the most intriguing selection battles at Chloorkop this season - with potential consequences for a place Bafana squad.
