Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen reverses stance in captaincy storm

The German goalkeeper, who had previously refused to sign off on sending his medical report to La Liga, has now taken a markedly conciliatory approach, signalling his willingness to cooperate and resolve the ongoing impasse.

This dramatic turnaround comes after weeks of tension, where Marc-Andre ter Stegen's stance had blocked Barcelona from registering new goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The club have been eager to secure the Espanyol shot-stopper's inscription, but needed the medical committee's green light, contingent on the report's submission.

In his statement, the 33-year-old acknowledged the difficulties but emphasised his commitment to the team.

"These last few months have been especially difficult for me, both physically and personally," Ter Stegen wrote. "As any player would after an injury, my sole priority has always been to return to the pitch as soon as possible, driven purely by the desire to help the team and do what I love most: compete."

He addressed the swirling rumours head-on, insisting that much of what had been said about him was unfounded. "In recent weeks, many things have been said about me, some of them completely baseless," he added. "That's why I feel it's necessary to share my side of the story with respect, but clearly."

Ter Stegen explained that his decision to undergo surgery had been made in consultation with medical experts and fully approved by Barcelona, with the aim of safeguarding his long-term health and career, goals he stressed were aligned with the club's ambitions.

He also clarified that all summer signings and contract renewals had occurred before his operation, dismissing any suggestion that his injury was being exploited to facilitate registrations. "Any other interpretation seems both unfair and inaccurate to me," he noted.

Throughout his career, the goalkeeper has prided himself on professionalism and loyalty. "I have always tried to conduct myself with professionalism, respect, and commitment to the badges I have represented," he said. "I have a deep affection for FC Barcelona, this city, and its people, who have supported me for so many years. My commitment to these colours remains total."

Crucially, Ter Stegen expressed readiness to engage in dialogue. "I understand that tough times can create tension, but I trust that through dialogue and responsibility, we can resolve this situation constructively," he stated. "I am fully willing to collaborate with the club's management to settle this matter and provide the required authorisation."

He signed off with a message to the fans: "Many things can change, but one thing never will: I love you, culers!"

Barcelona have welcomed this shift, viewing it as a key step towards unblocking player registrations. The broader Barcelona community, known as the culers, have responded positively, with hopes that the rift can now heal.

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has praised the statement on social media, posting: "Siempre ejemplar", meaning "Always exemplary." Ex-player Riqui Puig has also applauded the goalkeeper's words.

Recent updates on X highlight the saga's intensity before this resolution. Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsi had defended Marc-Andre ter Stegen's leadership, saying: "For now, Marc is part of the team, he's our captain, the one who guides us and our main supporter. We're happy with him and hope he stays that way."

Midfielder Gavi echoed this sentiment, calling him "a legend at the club" who "must be respected."

Defender Jules Kounde described the situation as "difficult" for the goalkeeper, noting it was not a topic for players to decide.

Fan accounts and analysts have mixed views, with some criticising the club's handling and others backing the disciplinary steps, but the statement appears to have eased tensions.
