Leverkusen were forced into action after first-choice goalkeeper Mark Flekken was sidelined by injury, prompting the Bundesliga champions to strengthen their goalkeeping options ahead of a demanding run of fixtures in domestic and European competitions.
Confirming the deal, Bayer Leverkusen managing director for sport Simon Rolfes underlined the experience Omlin brings to the squad. "Jonas Omlin is an internationally experienced goalkeeper who has proven his quality time and again at clubs in Switzerland, France and the Bundesliga," Rolfes said.
The 30-year-old arrives having spent much of the current campaign as second choice at Borussia Monchengladbach, behind Moritz Nicolas. Despite limited game time this season, Leverkusen believe Omlin's experience and reliability will be vital as they compete on multiple fronts.
Rolfes added that the club now feels well prepared despite Flekken's absence. "Following Mark's injury, Jonas completes our trio of goalkeepers. With him, Janis Blaswich and Niklas Lomb, we are once again well equipped for the challenges of the coming weeks and months," he said.
Omlin, who has represented Switzerland at international level, said the move was an opportunity he could not turn down. "I'm delighted that a club like Bayer 04 Leverkusen is putting its trust in me," he said. "A Champions League club with great ambitions – it's a fantastic opportunity to support my new team and contribute to achieving the goals we've set."
Leverkusen will hope Omlin's arrival ensures stability at the back as they look to maintain momentum in a crucial phase of the season.
