Bayer Leverkusen sit 10 points clear of Bayern Munich in Bundesliga

The result further solidifying their position at the league's summit and creating a substantial 10-point gap ahead of perennial champions Bayern Munich.

The opportunity to widen the lead presented itself after Bayern's stumble in a 2-2 draw against Freiburg, allowing Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen to capitalize on the slip-up.

In a solid display, Leverkusen extended their German record to 34 games unbeaten in all competitions, triumphing in a feisty Rhine derby against Cologne, who played with 10 men from the 15th minute. Alejandro Grimaldo orchestrated the opening goal in the 38th minute, with Jeremie Frimpong converting from close range, securing his eighth league goal of the season.

Grimaldo later sealed the victory in the 73rd minute, skilfully placing the ball at the near post following a brilliant play by substitute Amine Adli.

The match saw a pivotal moment when Jan Thielmann received a straight red card in the 15th minute, setting a fiery tone inside the RheinEnergieStadion. Despite Cologne's spirited efforts, Leverkusen maintained control, with Xabi Alonso noting, "We controlled the counter-attacks and were unlucky not to get the goals. In the end, we had patience and got the goals."

Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka emphasized the significance of their lead in the Bundesliga, stating, "Ten points are a lot, but it's not over yet. As long as it's not decided mathematically, we cannot say that it's done. We have to keep working and pick up a few more points as a team."

Cologne, currently in the relegation play-off spot and trailing safety by eight points, showcased resilience after the red card, narrowly missing opportunities with two shots hitting the post.

With 10 games remaining, Leverkusen looks poised for their first-ever Bundesliga title, marking a historic moment in the club's journey to football glory.
