Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany urges Lennart Karl to play with freedom ahead of Gladbach clash

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany urges Lennart Karl to play with freedom ahead of Gladbach clash

Speaking ahead of Bayern's Bundesliga trip to Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, Kompany said he wanted Karl to embrace the experience of playing for the German champions without burdening himself with pressure.

"As a young player, you don't have pressure," Kompany said. "I want Lennart to feel that too. He has to enjoy what he's doing. If he makes mistakes, we'll discuss it. Hopefully, at some point, the pressure will be on his shoulders. But for now, he should enjoy these moments without any pressure."

The 17-year-old midfielder, who has impressed since being promoted from Bayern's academy earlier this season, is regarded as one of the club's brightest prospects.

Karl made his Bundesliga debut in September and has featured in both domestic and Champions League matches under Kompany.

Asked whether Karl could make Germany's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kompany said his main priority was helping the youngster succeed with Bayern before thinking about international honours.

"I have great respect for Julian Nagelsmann," Kompany said. "My focus as Bayern coach is for Lennart Karl to be a success for Bayern Munich. He has to keep working and show that he has the qualities. Playing for Bayern can always be an advantage, but the focus has to be here, you can't think too far ahead."

Bayern, who are on a 12-match winning streak in all competitions, travel to Borussia-Park as league leaders looking to extend their advantage at the top of the table.
