Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka asks Barcelona manager Hansi Flick about potential move

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka asks Barcelona manager Hansi Flick about potential move

According to Mundo Deportivo, the 30-year-old has been in contact with the Barça head coach to express his willingness to work under him again once his Bayern contract expires at the end of the season. From January, Goretzka is permitted to hold talks with foreign clubs, opening the door to a potential free transfer.

The Germany international enjoyed his most successful period under Flick at Bayern, playing a key role in the side that swept to a historic sextuple in 2020. Operating in a physically dominant midfield alongside the likes of Joshua Kimmich or Thiago AlcAntara, Goretzka flourished in Flick's system - a sharp contrast to his more peripheral role in recent times, where he has struggled for prominence.

Barcelona's interest is not entirely new. The Catalans were among the clubs that monitored Goretzka closely when he left Schalke on a free transfer in 2018, before he opted for Bayern. Flick also reportedly considered a short-term move for him last winter as Barça searched for a more powerful midfield presence to complement Pedri and Frenkie de Jong.

Despite the existing connection, a move to Camp Nou remains far from straightforward. Barcelona are currently well stocked in midfield and are expected to prioritise reinforcements in other areas, particularly during the January window. While Flick is understood to appreciate Goretzka's experience and physical profile, he is not viewed as an immediate priority.

Financial considerations could also complicate matters. Goretzka's salary at Bayern is substantial, and any switch - whether to Barcelona or elsewhere in Europe - may require a significant pay cut. Napoli have also been mentioned as potential suitors, while interest from Saudi Arabia cannot be ruled out, though it is unclear if the midfielder would entertain such a move with a World Cup year on the horizon.

For now, Goretzka's future remains unresolved. His openness to leaving Bayern and his established relationship with Flick add intrigue, but whether that translates into a concrete Barcelona move will depend on squad needs, finances and the coach's long-term vision.
