Bayern Munich veteran Manuel Neuer eyes retirement at end of season

Speaking during Bayern's training camp in southern Bavaria on Tuesday evening, the 40-year-old said he was almost certain he would retire once the season concludes.

Neuer revealed that the strength and promise of Bayern's current squad convinced him to sign a one-year contract extension in May and continue playing.

"It certainly looks very likely I'm going to retire," Neuer told reporters.

"In 85 percent of cases, I probably would have retired, but being part of this squad -- along with the staff and the coaching team -- is just fun."

Despite battling several muscle injuries over the past year, Neuer has maintained his high standards. He missed Bayern's 3-0 German Cup final victory over Stuttgart in May, as well as several other matches during the season, with backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig stepping in.

Bayern head into the new campaign after securing the Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2025-26, although their Champions League run ended in the semi-finals against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. They are widely expected to challenge strongly for both trophies again.
