Borussia Dortmund back Julian Brandt to stay amid contract talks

The 28-year-old's pivotal role in the team's recent success has sparked fresh discussions about his long-term stay at the club.

Brandt delivered a standout performance in Dortmund's thrilling 3-2 win over Hoffenheim on Saturday, finding the net and earning praise from sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

"He's been with us for many years and remains a vital part of our squad," Kehl told Sky Germany. "We're delighted with his impact, and he'll continue to be crucial in the weeks ahead."

With Brandt's contract set to expire in 2026, Dortmund face a critical decision. The club could extend his deal or consider offers in the summer to avoid losing him for free.

Kehl remained optimistic but pragmatic, adding, "After the season, we'll sit down and address his situation. He's fully committed to Dortmund, and players of his quality are exactly what we need."

Brandt, who joined Dortmund from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019 for 25 million euros, has long been a fan favorite for his flair and vision. Despite occasional criticism for inconsistent form, his recent displays under new head coach Niko Kovac have silenced doubters.

"Julian showed his class against Freiburg and Hoffenheim," Kovac said in a recent press conference. "He's a difference-maker when he's at his best."

Dortmund's midfield has been bolstered by the emergence of loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, whose dynamic play has complemented Brandt's style. "Having players like Carney alongside him allows Julian to focus on attacking spaces," Kovac noted, hinting at a tactical shift that could secure Brandt's role in the squad.

As the season progresses, Dortmund's leadership have made it clear they value Brandt's contributions. Whether that translates into a new contract or a high-profile transfer remains to be seen, but for now, the German international appears central to their plans.
