Pep Guardiola: 'Selfless' Nico O'Reilly is a great asset for Man City
Despite a difficult campaign for Manchester City, young midfielder Nico O'Reilly has emerged as a bright spark for manager Pep Guardiola.
The 21-year-old, widely regarded as one of Germany's brightest talents, remains a prime target for the Bundesliga giants, though a deal with Leverkusen is yet to be finalized.
According to transfer expert Santi Aouna, Bayern have intensified their pursuit of Wirtz, holding productive discussions with his representatives. "Negotiations on personal terms are progressing well," Aouna reported, signaling Bayern's determination to bring the attacking midfielder to the Allianz Arena.
However, Leverkusen's stance on any potential transfer fee, rumored to be around 150 million euros, remains a hurdle, with no agreement yet reached between the clubs.
The situation at Leverkusen adds further intrigue. Speculation surrounding manager Xabi Alonso's future has intensified, with Real Madrid heavily linked to the Spaniard as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
Sources suggest that Alonso's potential exit could increase the likelihood of Wirtz seeking a move. "If Alonso leaves, Wirtz will leave for sure," an insider told Football Espana, highlighting the close bond between the player and his coach.
Bayern's interest in Wirtz is no secret. The club have long viewed him as a cornerstone for their future, with honorary president Uli Hoeness openly praising the player. "He's exactly the player we want to sign," Hoeness said, emphasizing Bayern's ambition to bolster their squad with young, dynamic talent.
The club's close relationship with Wirtz's father and agent, Hans Wirtz, has also strengthened their position, with multiple meetings reportedly held over the past year.
Manchester City remain in the hunt, however, eyeing Wirtz as a long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who is set to depart at the season's end. City manager Pep Guardiola has personally outlined his vision for Wirtz, reportedly meeting the player to discuss how he could fill De Bruyne's role.
Despite this, recent updates suggest City are trailing Bayern in the race. "Bayern believe they have the advantage," transfer journalist Christian Falk noted, pointing to the German club's proactive approach.
Leverkusen, for their part, are reluctant to let their star man go, particularly to a Bundesliga rival. CEO Fernando Carro has expressed confidence in retaining Wirtz, stating, "There's a high probability he'll stay. He has a contract until 2027." Carro also criticized Bayern's public pursuit, calling it "a show" and denying any formal offer from the Munich club.
As the transfer saga unfolds, Bayern's aggressive push for Wirtz underscores their intent to reclaim dominance in German football. Whether they can strike a deal with Leverkusen, or fend off competition from abroad, will determine if the young star dons their iconic red jersey next season.
