The 31-year-old has been one of the more consistent performers for Chiefs, producing an impressive run of form across all competitions.
Petersen has recorded 11 clean sheets from 18 appearances, statistics that underline his reliability and influence between the posts during the current campaign.
Those performances have not gone entirely unnoticed at international level. Petersen has earned inclusion in Bafana Bafana provisional squads on several occasions and was named in the initial 54-man provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, he ultimately missed out on selection when the final squad was announced, extending his wait for a senior national team breakthrough.
Speaking candidly, Petersen acknowledged the difficulty of breaking into the national side but made it clear that representing Bafana Bafana remains a major personal ambition. Rather than becoming discouraged, he has opted to keep his attention firmly on his responsibilities at Kaizer Chiefs.
"At the end of the day, yes I want to be in the national team, I want to represent my country but for me personally, my first and the most important job is at Kaizer Chiefs; they pay my salary, and that's where I work," said Petersen.
"I always say that the only thing I can control is my performances at club level. I can't control what the national coach, [Hugo Broos] does, that is his job.
"Whether he picks me or not, I can't complain about that. But obviously, as a footballer, I always want to be there, because that is my aim.
"But my main focus is performing at club level and try to be the best I can be."
