Brayan Leon targets even bigger season after dream start at Mamelodi Sundowns

Brayan Leon targets even bigger season after dream start at Mamelodi Sundowns

After arriving at Chloorkop from Colombian outfit Independiente Medellin in January, Leon quickly established himself as one of the most lethal finishers in the Betway Premiership, scoring 15 goals in just 26 appearances across all competitions.

The 25-year-old's impact was immediate. Despite joining midway through the season and facing the challenge of adapting to a new country, league and continent, he became a key figure in Miguel Cardoso's side as Sundowns enjoyed success both domestically and in Africa.

Now enjoying a close-season break in his native Colombia, Leon is determined to return stronger and raise the bar even higher.

"Next season, I want to score more goals than I did this season," Leon told Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine.

"If I scored 15 in half a season, I know I can do much better in a full one. And I want to help the team win more trophies. It is going to be an exciting season for us."

Those comments will serve as a warning to rival defenders across the PSL and the continent. Having netted 15 times after arriving in January, the prospect of a fully settled Leon beginning a campaign from the opening day is an enticing one for Sundowns supporters.

While his goals have made headlines, the Colombian insists team success remains his primary motivation. His first few months at the club culminated in one of the biggest achievements in Sundowns' recent history as they ended a decade-long wait for CAF Champions League glory.

Reflecting on the experience, Leon admitted lifting the continental crown exceeded even his own expectations.

"These five months have been incredible. Playing in the PSL and the CAF Champions League was different from anything I have experienced," he said.

"Away games were the toughest because you need extra energy, extra focus and extra heart.

"Winning the CAF Champions League feels surreal. To help bring the trophy back after ten years... that was our biggest dream. Everyone is happy. Everyone worked for this."

For now, Leon is focused on recharging with family and friends before the demands of another busy season begin.

"I am excited to go home and see my family and friends in Colombia. I will rest, recover and prepare for next season," he added.

Given the speed with which he adapted to life at Sundowns, there is growing belief that the striker's outstanding debut half-season may only have scratched the surface of his potential.

If Leon can maintain the form that made him one of South African football's most feared forwards, the reigning champions could have an even more formidable weapon at their disposal in the months ahead.
