Brentford break transfer record to land Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens

The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract at the Gtech Community Stadium, with the Bees holding the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months. While Brentford did not disclose the transfer fee, reports suggest the deal is worth around 38.5 million pounds, making it the biggest signing in the club's history.

Sangare arrives after an impressive campaign with Lens, where he established himself as one of Ligue 1's standout midfielders. He made more than 30 appearances in all competitions as the French side finished second in the league and lifted the Coupe de France, while also cementing his place in the Mali national team.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews revealed the club had monitored Sangare's progress for an extended period before making their move.

"Mamadou is someone that we've tracked for quite some time. He's been on our radar and was a player we were really keen to bring in," Andrews said.

"Last season was a huge season for him following a couple of loan spells during which he developed. At Lens, he performed at such a consistently high level for a team that finished second in the league."

The Brentford boss believes Sangare will bring a different dimension to his midfield, highlighting both his footballing ability and his character.

"He adds qualities that we don't have. He complements the current midfield," Andrews said.

"Added to that was his form for Mali, where he became a really key player for them.

"From the conversations I've had with him, he's very keen to come here. He's a humble young man, but he's equally as determined to succeed in his career. He fits everything we want from a Brentford player, on and off the pitch. He'll be a player that I think will become very, very popular with the fans."

Sangare's journey to the Premier League has seen him progress through the Red Bull Salzburg system before loan spells helped him establish himself at Hartberg, earning a move to Rapid Vienna. His performances in Austria convinced Lens to sign him last year, and he quickly adapted to French football, becoming a regular in midfield.

On the international stage, Sangare has won 16 caps for Mali and featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further enhancing his reputation.

Despite the recent departure of Jordan Henderson by mutual consent, Brentford's move for Sangare was not made as a direct replacement. The club had identified the midfielder as a priority target regardless of Henderson's future, fending off interest from several clubs, including Crystal Palace, to secure his signature.
