CAF Champions League: Pressure mounts as Sundowns face must-win Lupopo test

Downs head coach Miguel Cardoso admitting expectations are rising as the Brazilians chase a place in the quarter-finals.

Group C Finely Balanced Ahead of Kick-Off

The group standings tightened significantly following MC Alger's 2-1 victory over Al-Hilal Omdurman on 6 February. Both sides now lead Group C on eight points from five matches, leaving the race for qualification wide open heading into the final fixtures.

Sundowns sit third on five points from four games, while Lupopo are fourth on four points. A win for the Tshwane giants on Sunday would see them move level with the leaders before the final matchday, where Sundowns host MC Alger and Al-Hilal face Lupopo.

Form Guide and Match Context

Sundowns enter the contest under pressure after a 2-1 CAF Champions League defeat to Al-Hilal, a result that tightened the standings. However, they regained momentum domestically with a 2-1 Nedbank Cup victory over Gomora United.

Lupopo come into the match following a 2-0 loss to MC Alger, but remain firmly in contention for qualification and will aim to use home advantage to keep their campaign alive.

What Cardoso Said

Cardoso acknowledged the growing expectations surrounding the squad.

"There's increased permanent pressure on my players regarding the Champions League and cups," Cardoso said.
"They are professionals and experienced, but it's not that simple because we are all human beings. Everywhere we go, people ask when we will put the second star on our badge."

Players to Watch

Arthur Sales - Mamelodi Sundowns
The Brazilian forward has emerged as an important attacking option and is expected to play a decisive role in breaking down Lupopo's defence.

Michael Kimputu - Saint-Eloi Lupopo
A key attacking outlet for the hosts, Kimputu carries much of Lupopo's goal threat and will look to exploit any defensive lapses from Sundowns.

Expert Preview

With Group C poised on a knife edge, Sundowns are likely to rely on their technical control and continental experience, while Lupopo may adopt an aggressive, high-energy approach in front of their supporters. The stakes are clear - a victory could reshape the qualification picture, making Sunday's clash one of the most pivotal fixtures of the group stage.
