CAF Champions League Preview: Orlando Pirates face Saint-Eloi Lupopo test in Lubumbashi

Fresh from a resounding 7–0 aggregate win over Lesotho’s Lioli FC in the first round, the Buccaneers enter this crucial tie brimming with confidence. But the trip to Lubumbashi is expected to pose a far sterner challenge, both on and off the pitch.

Under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates have hit the ground running. The club’s recent form - including a 10-match winning run across all competitions - reflects a side that has found rhythm and resilience. Their Champions League ambition is clear: to add a second star to their badge following their historic 1995 triumph.

Last season, they fell just short, losing 3–2 on aggregate in the semi-finals to eventual champions Pyramids FC. This year, with fresh leadership and squad depth, they’ll hope to go one better.

For Saint-Eloi Lupopo, this fixture marks a continuation of their slow but steady return to prominence on the continental stage. The Congolese giants finished second in the 2024–25 Linafoot, narrowly missing out on the title but finishing above heavyweights TP Mazembe and AS Vita.

Their qualification came after edging Al-Merrikh of Sudan 1–0 in the previous round. That win, secured at home, highlighted their reputation as a formidable side in front of their passionate Lubumbashi crowd.

The two-legged tie offers the winner a place in the lucrative CAF Champions League group stage - a key target for both clubs.

The return leg will be hosted at Orlando Stadium on October 25. If the teams are level on aggregate after 180 minutes, the away goals rule will apply. If still tied, the match will go straight to penalties.
