Carlos Queiroz full of praise as Ghana denied late penalty in hard-fought England stalemate

The Black Stars kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama as the Three Lions cruised to a 4-2 win over Croatia.

But there was no separating the two sides at the Boston Stadium on Tuesday, as Harry Kane missed a glorious chance to win the tie late with a close-range shot he blasted over the target.

There were also calls for a last-gasp penalty for Ghana as Prince Adu was upended by Ezri Konsa inside the England penalty area, but astonishingly there was no VAR review after the referee waved play-on.

Speaking after the game, Queiroz was delighted to pick up a point that could ensure his side's place in the knockout rounds, with still Croatia to play.

England complete their group stage campaign against Panama.

"Football is not only about possession. It is also about having the right attitude," Queiroz said on IOL.

"We celebrated because we got a draw against a team who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup."

"You have to pay a high price to get points. Probably because we are in the United States where everything is expensive," added the former Real Madrid and Bafana Bafana head coach.

Reflecting on the late penalty call, Queiroz added: “The VAR went for a coffee which is natural but it is a clear penalty and a red card.”
