Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca hails 'Palmer-like' maturity shown by Estevao Willian

With Palmer sidelined by a groin injury, Maresca has turned to the 18-year-old to help carry Chelsea's attacking threat in a busy run of fixtures.

The Italian said Estevao's temperament and understanding of the game have stood out since his arrival from Palmeiras in August. He was signed in June 2024.

Speaking to Sky Sport, Maresca said: "Yes, he's a very young player, born in 2007, and he's just turned 18. He arrived with his family, and we did everything we could to make him feel at ease. The club was good, but the truth is that he's a strong player.

"He reminds me a lot of Cole Palmer, even physically. He has the same footballing maturity despite his age."

Estevao, who can play on either wing or drift inside like Palmer, has already shown flashes of his potential in the Premier League, contributing goals and assists, including a match-winning strike against champions Liverpool.

His performances have given Chelsea fans optimism during Palmer's absence.

Maresca has repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining attacking creativity, especially with one of the team's most influential players unavailable. Estevao's composure in possession and confidence under pressure have reportedly impressed senior teammates as well.

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who joined Chelsea this season, described Estevão in one word, "flair." The pair have quickly developed an understanding both on and off the pitch, though Pedro will miss Wednesday's Champions League clash against Ajax due to suspension following his red card against Benfica.

With Pedro out and Palmer still recovering, Estevao is expected to feature at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue their push to reach the knockout stages.

For Maresca, the teenager's emergence could not have come at a better time.
