Ronald Araujo leads Barcelona back to training ahead of Espanyol clash
Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has returned to first-team training, sparking hope he could feature in the Catalan derby against Espanyol on Saturday.

Carvajal, 33, has missed most of the season after suffering a knee setback in late October 2025. Medical tests revealed a loose intra-articular body in his right knee, and Real Madrid confirmed he underwent arthroscopic surgery shortly afterwards. The procedure ruled him out from early November, with an initial recovery period of two to three months and a targeted return in mid-January 2026.
Carvajal is not yet ready to return. The captain is prioritising a full recovery ahead of the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid next Thursday.
"My plan is to be back from injury in early 2026 with the guarantee to be one hundred percent fit," Carvajal said recently.
Reflecting on his progress, he added: "Now that I am working on the pitch again, I feel closer to returning. I never imagined I'd feel this way after a very light individual training session."
Real Madrid face Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final next Thursday in Saudi Arabia, with a potential final against either Athletic Club or Barcelona. Carvajal is hopeful of being available for that tournament, with a full return expected later in January.
In his absence, Fede Valverde is set to continue at right-back against Betis and could also fill the role in Saudi Arabia, depending on Carvajal's readiness.
There was more encouraging injury news elsewhere for Madrid. David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and Valverde are all expected to be fit after the break following muscle problems. However, Kylian Mbappe is a doubt for the Super Cup after twisting his knee in training this week.
Mbappe joins Eder Militao and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the sidelines, with both defenders not expected back until February and March respectively. Defensive injuries have been a major challenge for Xabi Alonso this season, making Carvajal's careful recovery all the more important for Madrid's ambitions.
