Declan Rice defends Noni Madueke signing, backs new Arsenal winger to impress

Madueke, 23, joined the Gunners last week for an initial fee of 48.5 million pounds as part of Mikel Arteta's efforts to strengthen the squad's attacking options ahead of the new season. However, the move was met with resistance from sections of the fanbase, with the hashtag #NoToMadueke trending on social media and a petition opposing the transfer gaining over 5,000 signatures.

Speaking after Arsenal's 1-0 pre-season victory over AC Milan in Singapore, Rice voiced his support for his new teammate and called for unity among supporters.

"I didn't like the reaction online, to be honest," Rice said. "I know how driven he is. I've spoken to him and you're going to see what he's about this season. He wants to prove and show everyone what he really can do."

"He's hungry, he wants to play for Arsenal and that's the type of player we want. It's so positive. He's going to shock a lot of people, and I can't wait for him to come."

Madueke, who has made 92 appearances and scored 20 goals for Chelsea over the past two seasons, is expected to offer depth on both flanks - providing support for Bukayo Saka on the right and challenging Gabriel Martinelli on the left.

His one-on-one ability and willingness to take on defenders are seen as key attributes for an Arsenal side that has occasionally struggled to break down deep defensive blocks. Rice believes those qualities will make a meaningful difference in a long and demanding season.

"When you're an attacking player and your first instinct is to go past your defender, that's an unbelievable trait to have," said Rice. "He's going to bring that to the squad along with the other wingers we have."

Arsenal's lack of depth in key areas last season was a factor in their late-season dip in form. Rice pointed out that adding competition and versatility in attack could prove vital across all competitions.

"Let's be real - last year we hardly had any depth in any areas," he added. "We played half the season pretty much with so many injuries, so to now be able to rotate and push in different competitions is going to be really, really good. That's key for us."

The England international also revealed a personal gesture he made to welcome Madueke to the club. Rice wrote a letter to the winger ahead of his unveiling, which featured prominently in Arsenal's announcement video.

"The club came up with the idea - it was a nice little touch for him to feel welcome," Rice said. "He messaged me about it, saying he really appreciated it."

Madueke becomes Arsenal's latest addition in a busy transfer window, following the arrivals of Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera while a deal for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres in nearing completion.

With Arsenal pushing for silverware after near misses in recent seasons, Rice is confident that Madueke's arrival will help elevate the team's level as they prepare for another challenging campaign under Arteta.
