Dillon Sheppard backs Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala to succeed at Kaizer Chiefs

Both academy graduates have been central to Chiefs’ steady climb this season.

The club sits fourth on the Premiership log heading into the Africa Cup of Nations break—a position that reflects their progress during a transitional period marked by changes in coaching staff and playing personnel.

“Shabba has been exceptional this season,” Sheppard told Independent Newspapers.

“He’s been in the mix for the national team, and in high-pressure situations, he has consistently delivered. He’s still young and learning, but the more minutes he gets, the more confident he becomes.”

Vilakazi, meanwhile, has continued his upward trajectory following a strong showing at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Operating primarily in wide areas, he has demonstrated creativity, incisive movement, and a dangerous left foot, offering Chiefs an attacking edge.

“They both have the personality and character to succeed,” Sheppard said.

“It’s not easy at a club like Kaizer Chiefs, but they remain focused, disciplined, and resilient despite the intense scrutiny that comes with representing one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.”

Sheppard also praised the DStv Diski Challenge for preparing the youngsters for first-team demands, helping them cope with large crowds, high expectations, and critical moments without losing focus.

With consistent performances, growing confidence, and a clear pathway to national recognition, Vilakazi and Shabalala are poised to play pivotal roles as Chiefs aim to solidify their place among the country’s top teams and continue their rebuilding process.
