Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is hoping to finalise his new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) before the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Tanzania.
According to SCORENigeria, the former Mali coach is keen to put pen to paper ahead of the two-legged encounter as uncertainty continues over his future with the Nigerian national team.
Nigeria will host Tanzania in Uyo on November 11 before travelling to East Africa for the return fixture four days later. The Super Eagles will be looking to get their qualification campaign back on track following a setback against Guinea-Bissau.
Despite reportedly reaching a gentleman's agreement over a new deal, Chelle is said to be uncomfortable with the delay in finalising the agreement.
"He hopes he can finally sign the new contract before the matches against Tanzania," a source told SCORENigeria.
"He is not in a great position at the moment without this new deal."
The delay has reportedly been caused by the sudden resignation of the entire NFF executive committee last month, leaving uncertainty over who will oversee the finalisation of the agreement.
With the federation currently without a board, the responsibility could fall on the NFF secretariat and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to complete the process.
Chelle's current contract, which reportedly earns him $50,000 per month, is set to expire in January 2026, with an option for an additional year. However, that extension may not be activated following Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the team's inability to reach the final of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Nevertheless, the NFF and NSC have reportedly agreed on improved terms for the coach.
The proposed contract would increase Chelle's monthly salary to $75,000 and see him oversee both the Super Eagles and Nigeria's Olympic team until August 2028.
