Eric Garcia has 'no issue' playing 'mixed roles' in Barcelona's tactical changes

The 24-year-old, who came through La Masia as a centre-back, has been used at right-back, in central defence and as a holding midfielder during Barcelona's early push to stay in the La Liga title race.

Garcia, who signed a contract extension through to 2031 this week, said his flexibility has become a valuable asset as Barcelona continue to reshape their style under their German coach.

"I haven't played as a striker yet!" he joked. "I have always been a centre-back, but I feel very comfortable at full-back. This year I am playing as a defensive midfielder and, little by little, I am adapting to wherever the manager asks me to play."

Barcelona's coaching staff are understood to be pleased with Garcia's tactical awareness and composure, particularly in a season disrupted by injuries to key defenders. Flick has already rotated his back line several times, and Garcia's ability to shift roles has helped maintain stability.

The former Manchester City defender has also been viewed as a growing leader within the squad following a series of composed displays. Garcia said the suggestions he is now considered one of the dressing-room captains reflected the trust he has built over time.

"I have always been a captain behind the scenes. I like to help my teammates when they are going through a tough time, on and off the pitch," he said. "The coaches have always trusted me in this regard. It is something that comes naturally. Setting it as a goal would not be a good idea."

Barcelona have rewarded Garcia's progress with a long-term deal, strengthening their defensive core at a time when the club remain committed to developing younger players. His new contract, which runs until 2031, marks a significant vote of confidence as the Catalans prepare for a demanding second half of the campaign.
