Ernst Middendorp's return signals strategic reset at Durban City

Ernst Middendorp's return signals strategic reset at Durban City

The veteran German coach had temporarily stepped away from the position just three months after his off-season appointment. His initial involvement came during Gavin Hunt's short-lived spell in charge, a period that attracted attention amid reports of contrasting football viewpoints within the club's technical leadership.

Chairman Farook Kadodia has since played down those suggestions, confirming that Middendorp had already carried out his primary responsibility - putting robust football structures in place following the club's promotion at the end of last season.

Middendorp's return comes at a moment of transition for the Durban-based outfit. Earlier this month, the club parted ways with Hunt before making a surprise call by appointing Sinethemba Badela as head coach, a decision announced on Friday that signalled a shift in direction.

By reinstating Middendorp now, Durban City appear intent on ensuring that the reset does not disrupt the long-term plan. His deep-rooted understanding of the club, dating back to its days as Maritzburg United, provides continuity during a period of change.

Across four separate spells at the club, Middendorp has repeatedly been relied upon in difficult circumstances, earning credit for steadying the ship and guiding the team away from relegation when pressure was at its highest.

That history continues to inform the club's trust in his judgment, with the board reaffirming its support for his role behind the scenes.

Currently sitting seventh on the Betway Premiership standings with 22 points, Durban City will use the Africa Cup of Nations break in Morocco to realign before resuming league action in late January, with Middendorp once again helping shape the club's path forward.
