FIFA launches probe into World Cup final brawl

World football's governing body has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the events that unfolded following the final whistle of a tense and dramatic final.

Spain claimed their second World Cup title thanks to Ferran Torres' extra-time winner after a fiercely contested match. Argentina had already been reduced to 10 men late in normal time when Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card and sent off in the 93rd minute.

Emotions spilled over once the match ended as Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes became involved in a confrontation with several Spain players, including Eric Garcia and Gavi.

The altercation quickly escalated into a larger brawl involving players from both teams, with pushing and shoving across the pitch before officials and coaching staff stepped in to restore order.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was among those trying to calm his players as tempers flared following the ill-tempered final.

FIFA has not announced when the investigation is expected to be completed, and it remains unclear whether any disciplinary action will follow.
