Florian Wirtz: 'Liverpool must chase top-five finish'

The Reds were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain, who won 2-0 at Anfield to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory. Despite the disappointment, Wirtz quickly turned his focus to the league run-in, where Liverpool have six matches left to secure a top-five finish.

"The focus now is completely on the league," Wirtz said. "We have to play in the Champions League next season. We owe this to the club and to the fans. We will give everything and hopefully finish in the top five."

Arne Slot's side currently sit fifth in the Premier League, with qualification still firmly in their hands.

Liverpool produced a far stronger performance in the second leg and pushed PSG for long periods. Virgil van Dijk came close in the first half, only to be denied by a crucial block from Marquinhos. The hosts were also awarded a penalty after the break, but it was overturned following a VAR review.

Wirtz praised the atmosphere and effort but admitted the decisive moment never came. "We tried everything," he said. "The stadium was incredible, the fans were amazing. But we needed that one goal to change the tie, and we just couldn't find it."

Late goals from Ousmane Dembele ended any hopes of a comeback, leaving Liverpool to reflect on missed chances.

"It's frustrating," Wirtz added. "When you don't score, you don't win. That's football. We have to accept it and move on."

Attention now shifts to a crucial Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, a fixture that could prove decisive in their push for Champions League qualification.
