Frenkie de Jong's Barcelona exit clears path for Liverpool bombshell

In discussions with Liverpool, Barcelona's sporting director Deco has set an asking price of 40 million euros for the midfielder, according to Spanish outlet El Nacional.

Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League and advancing in both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, are looking to bolster their squad under new manager Arne Slot.

Despite a successful season with almost the same squad inherited from Jurgen Klopp, the only significant addition being Federico Chiesa, Liverpool's transfer ambitions were thwarted when Martin Zubimendi chose Arsenal over Anfield.

De Jong, whose contract negotiations with Barcelona have stalled, is seen as a prime candidate to revitalize Liverpool's midfield. His departure from Barcelona is viewed as an opportunity for the club to address their financial woes, given that De Jong is one of their highest earners, taking home 365,385 euros weekly.

Barcelona are already eyeing Joshua Kimmich as De Jong's replacement, a versatile player from Bayern Munich who favors a midfield role. This move could be financially beneficial for Barcelona, especially since Kimmich could be available as a free agent.

From Liverpool's perspective, De Jong's playing style is considered a perfect fit for Slot's tactics.

Jamie Carragher has advocated for significant signings this summer, pointing out that Liverpool could benefit from Manchester United's recent transfer dealings.

Meanwhile, speculation around the futures of Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk has been rife as their contracts approach expiration.

However, talks of Alisson Becker's potential move to Saudi Arabia have been quelled by sources close to the club, affecting the prospects for other goalkeepers at Liverpool like Giorgi Mamardashvili and Caoimhin Kelleher.

This summer transfer window promises to be a pivotal one for both clubs, with significant movements expected that could reshape their line-ups for the upcoming seasons.
