Gavin Hunt stays composed after Durban derby defeat, eyes Cup response

Hunt’s team lost 1-0 to their neighbours, courtesy of a Taariq Fielies goal in the 88th minute at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday.

“I don’t think it affects anything. That will be another game in another competition. They (Richards Bay) lost on Friday, we lost on Saturday — so honestly, it changes nothing,” said Hunt during the post-match interview.

New to the top-flight, Durban City have made an encouraging start to life in the Betway Premiership, combining confidence with composure. Their control in possession again stood out, though Hunt admitted his side lacked the cutting edge required at this level.

“When you win, it’s always a good plan. We dominated large parts but needed to be better, especially in our wide areas. We didn’t create enough 2v1s like we usually do, and to concede late like that is disappointing,” he said.

Despite the sting of a derby defeat, Hunt remains focused on steady progress and says there are still some things to work on at the club.

“It gives us a few things to work on — those are just football things. It takes time, but we’ll get there,” he added.

Durban City now turn their attention to Saturday’s Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Richards Bay, where Hunt will look to turn lessons from the derby into a confident response and a potential semi-final berth.
