Germany's Julian Nagelsmann plays down Florian Wirtz slow Liverpool start

Germany's Julian Nagelsmann plays down Florian Wirtz slow Liverpool start

The 22-year-old arrived with heavy expectations following a 100 million pound move from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen after the 2024/25 season.

However, Wirtz is yet to register a goal or assist in his first seven Premier League matches with the Reds.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann responded to questions about the attacker's club form following a convincing 4-0 World Cup qualifier win against Luxembourg, where Wirtz played the full 90 minutes.

"Even if he hasn't scored a goal, he's the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League," said the 38-year-old coach to Sport 1.

"It's not his fault if his team-mate doesn't create them, and the statistic isn't even a third of the truth. He simply has to get used to the league.

"I've seen him feel completely liberated. He knows what he's capable of and how things work. Not everything has always been handed to him, he'll work hard now, too."

The Germans are set to take on Northern Ireland on Monday in the last 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier of the current international break.
