Gonzalo Garcia enjoying life as Real Madrid challenge intensifies

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout moment at the FIFA Club World Cup in summer 2025, finishing as joint-top scorer with four goals as Madrid reached the semi-final losing to PSG. Reflecting on that achievement, Garcia told El Larguero, "I look at it now with a little more perspective, as time has passed and I've come to terms with it a little better. I look back and I'm surprised myself."

Despite receiving offers from several clubs, the young Spaniard decided to stay and fight for his place under Xabi Alonso. "My only option was always to stay at Real Madrid," he said. "For me, it's a dream to be part of the first team and I'm very happy with the decision I made."

With Kylian Mbappe and Brazilian prodigy Endrick among those vying for attacking roles, Garcia knows competition is fierce. "We're talking about the best club in the world, and obviously, the competition is intense because the best players are always here. I've been in the academy for many years, and I don't regret the decision I made," he added.

There was speculation about who would inherit the iconic number 9 shirt ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. Endrick was ultimately handed the number, but Garcia took it in stride. "I knew there was a possibility of keeping it, but I didn't get to choose. The club offers numbers to those who have been here longer, and Endrick wanted it. I wasn't going to complain; I'm happy to be part of the squad, no matter what number I wear."

Garcia also addressed Madrid's 5–2 defeat to rivals Atletico Madrid on September 27, admitting the team failed to adapt. "We didn't know how to read the game properly," he said. "The manager told us that joys and disappointments should be short-lived. We're analysing what happened and learning from it."

The young forward praised Xabi Alonso's impact on his development. "He always showed confidence in me during the Club World Cup, giving me advice to keep calm. He's very approachable and one of the best coaches in the world," Garcia noted.

He also dismissed rumours of dressing-room unrest involving Federico Valverde. "No player has refused to play in another position. We're all willing to play anywhere to help the team. I'd play full-back, centre-back, or goalkeeper if they asked me."

Looking ahead, Garcia said he remains focused solely on the present. "Right now, my mind is only focused on this season with Madrid, making the most of every minute I'm given. There's no need to waste time thinking about the future because I'm where I want to be."
