The experienced midfielder parted ways with Amakhosi in 2019 under difficult circumstances, with his contract mutually terminated just days before the club's Nedbank Cup final against TS Galaxy.
At the heart of the split was a breakdown in negotiations over a new deal, despite Ekstein having spent five years with the club's senior team after rising through the development ranks.
Looking back, the 35-year-old admits the situation could have been handled differently.
"To be honest, we didn't agree with the figures on the contract. I felt that I deserved more because we were on our way to the (Nedbank) final," he said on Radio 2000.
However, with time came reflection, and Ekstein chose to mend relations with the club's leadership.
"But to be honest, I don't want to talk about those matters because after everything, I also went to the Village to apologise to the chairman (Kaizer Motaung)," he added.
The midfielder explained that the manner of his departure never sat well with him, prompting his decision to return to Naturena and make amends.
"So I made peace, and I also think they are at peace. So I am fine, and I also think the team is fine. The way I left the team, I think it was not the right way, according to the way I got the news. So I had to go and apologise."
Since leaving Chiefs, Ekstein has taken a well-travelled route, including spells in Azerbaijan with Sabah FC and Sabail FK, before returning to South Africa.
Now at AmaZulu under coach Arthur Zwane, he has re-established himself as an important figure in the squad and continues to enjoy his football in the Betway Premiership.
