Hlompho Kekana backs Orlando Pirates' Makhehleni Makhaula for Player of the Season

At 35 years old, Makhaula may not be the flashiest name in the Sea Robbers' line-up, but his contribution this season has been nothing short of immense.

The defensive midfielder has featured in 13 of Pirates' 14 CAF Champions League fixtures and missed just four of their 26 Betway Premiership matches, scoring once.

He also played a key role in the Buccaneers' early-season MTN8 triumph, further cementing his value in key competitions.

Kekana, known for his leadership and sharp eye for talent, described Makhaula as an "unsung hero" who embodies consistency and resilience.

"This is my Player for the Season [Makhehleni Makhaula]," said Kekana on SABC Sport's Soccer Zone.

"There was no Pirates without this player, and I'll tell you why: he gave them stability in the midfield.

"Those who played in the midfield at the highest level, they'll tell you that without this man Pirates were nowhere because he gave them stability.

"You know, he was ready to do the dirty job for Orlando Pirates. There is no Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] without Makhaula."

Makhaula's journey to prominence has been one of steady progress. He first made his name with Free State Stars, had a short spell with Highlands Park, and spent two-and-a-half years at AmaZulu before joining Orlando Pirates in January 2023. Since then, he has quietly amassed nearly 200 appearances in the top flight of South African football.
