India coach Gautam Gambhir receives mediocre marks from Mohammad Kaif, Zaheer Khan

India coach Gautam Gambhir receives mediocre marks from Mohammad Kaif, Zaheer Khan

Gambhir, who has led India since July 2024, has overseen a period that has produced major ICC trophies and impressive results across formats. However, inconsistent phases have also fuelled debate over the team's long-term direction.

Kaif delivered the harsher verdict, awarding Gambhir 4 out of 10. He argued that a head coach's responsibilities go beyond tactical planning, stressing the importance of maintaining openness and providing players with clear explanations regarding selection decisions and their roles within the squad.

Kaif also pointed to ongoing speculation surrounding Gambhir's relationship with Virat Kohli, saying the uncertainty has become a frequent topic of discussion.

"I will deduct marks. I will rate him 4 out of 10," Kaif said via Cricbuzz.

"There are a lot of talks about Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. That picture is not becoming clear. It's not clear whether they are talking or not. If one player is dropped, the reason behind it should be clear. If Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are not working together, this is not good news for us."

Zaheer, meanwhile, gave Gambhir a more measured 6 out of 10. While recognising India's accomplishments under the current coaching staff, he also agreed that transparency could improve.

"Under his leadership, we have won the T20 World Cup. His highs are also there. I will give him 6. As far as improvement, transparency and communication are concerned, it is a work in progress," said Khan.

"You can call it a concern. Whenever you talk about Indian cricket, one thing you will see is talent and ability. You have all the ingredients. How to use them and make the best out of them is up to you."
