Sunil Gavaskar: It's better not to delay Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut

Sunil Gavaskar: It's better not to delay Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut

Sooryavanshi is part of India's squad for the ongoing T20I series against England after also being selected for the earlier series against Ireland, but he has yet to make his senior international debut despite widespread excitement among fans.

With four matches still remaining in the England series, beginning with the next encounter on 4 July, the 15-year-old remains in contention for his maiden India cap.

If he debuts on that date, he will be 15 years, 3 months and 7 days old, becoming India's youngest-ever international player. He would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record by almost a year and also become the youngest cricketer to make a T20I debut for any full-member nation.

Gavaskar stressed that he is not calling for India to fast-track the youngster into international cricket.

Instead, he believes the team management should be decisive once a player has been selected rather than repeatedly leaving him out of the playing XI.

"It (the delay) will put him (Sooryavanshi) under more pressure whenever he gets an opportunity. But at 15 years of age, you don't think too much about pressure," Gavaskar told Sony Sports Network.

"He knows that if he gets the opportunity in the second or third game, he will have to deliver almost immediately. That's there. But he is happy to be around. This Indian team is full of lovely, tremendous players, and it is just fantastic for him to be learning from them."
