25-year-old Barcelona winger scored England's opener in the 55th minute of Wednesday's last-four clash in Atlanta, finishing from Morgan Rogers' cross to put Thomas Tuchel's side on course for a first World Cup final since 1966. But Argentina produced a stunning late comeback as Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez struck after Gordon had been substituted, sealing a 2-1 victory for the defending champions.
In an emotional post on Instagram, Gordon reflected on England's painful exit and the opportunity that slipped away.
"Truly devastated. I genuinely thought this was our time to win after waiting so many years but it wasn't to be and it's going to hurt for a while," he wrote.
"I've never wanted to win so badly, not just for the trophy but for everything we built as a group and what it would have meant for England. I've loved every minute of representing this country at a World Cup and creating memories that will live on for a long time."
Gordon also thanked supporters who backed England throughout the tournament in the United States and from home.
"Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey out here in the US and back home. It was so good to see the togetherness and celebrations. We will have our day."
Despite the disappointment, Gordon reserved special praise for Lionel Messi, whose two assists inspired Argentina's comeback and booked a second successive World Cup final for Lionel Scaloni's side against Spain.
"I've watched Leo Messi for many years making the difference for Barcelona, and today I realized he is even better than I thought," Gordon told reporters after the match.
"I'm disappointed that we've been eliminated, but at least I know the World Cup trophy will be won by someone who truly loves Barcelona."
Having recently completed his move to the Catalan club, Gordon's admiration for Messi carries added significance given the Argentine's legendary status at Camp Nou.
Gordon enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign, contributing one goal and three assists in six appearances. England will now face France in the third-place playoff before the winger links up with his new Barcelona teammates for pre-season.
