Inter Milan's late move for Curtis Jones rejected by Liverpool

Inter Milan's late move for Curtis Jones rejected by Liverpool

Inter's interest became public on Friday, January 30, as Liverpool were preparing for a Premier League home clash against Newcastle United the following evening.

The approach was described as fleeting and was met with an unequivocal rejection, with Liverpool making it clear they had no intention of weakening their squad so late in the transfer window, which was due to close at 7pm the following Monday.

While the move was never privately dismissed as inaccurate, it was reportedly given short shrift. Liverpool's focus at the time was on strengthening rather than selling, as they sought defensive cover and explored a potential deal with RB Leipzig for Lutsharel Geertruida.

Reports also suggested Denzel Dumfries may have featured briefly in discussions between the clubs.

Inter's interest is believed to have been influenced by Jones' performance at San Siro in early December, when Liverpool handed the Italians their first home UEFA Champions League defeat in three years.

"I think it is perfectly normal that very good football players are in the interest of big clubs, like us, trying to extend with him and clubs wanting to sign him," said head coach Arne Slot.

"And if you go to the end of your contract, I think it is also normal that other big clubs think: 'Hmmm, maybe there's a deal to be done'. Because, and I am saying this every time I am standing here lately, you know our model.

"Other clubs know our model as well, so other clubs might think: 'Okay, there is no use calling them because they don't sell', we have a different model. So that could be the reason why there has been some links with other clubs."
