Julian Nagelsmann slams Germany's 'tactical suicide' after Ecuador World Cup shock

Germany had already wrapped up top spot in the group before kick-off, while Ecuador's comeback victory in New Jersey secured third place and enough points to progress to the knockout stage.

Germany made the perfect start when Leroy Sane found the net after just two minutes to give Julian Nagelsmann's side an early advantage. However, the lead lasted only seven minutes as Nilson Angulo drew Ecuador level, setting the stage for an intense contest.

With their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance, Ecuador played with greater urgency throughout the match. Their persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal to seal a famous victory and book their place in the last 32.

Despite already being assured of finishing first in the group, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann was deeply disappointed with his team's display and criticised their tactical discipline after taking the lead.

"We got off to a great start," Nagelsmann said. "Unfortunately, right after scoring, we started committing tactical suicide with our positioning. That makes things difficult."

He admitted Ecuador deserved credit for their determination, saying they had "everything to play for" and showed it throughout the game. However, Nagelsmann defended the effort of his players, insisting nobody lacked commitment despite the defeat.

The Germany coach also stressed that ending the group stage with a loss was far from ideal ahead of Monday's knockout clash.

"Defeat is never good, not even in a game where you can't lose top spot," he said. "We'll learn our lessons and move on. We have to improve, but we also have to look forward. We've won a lot of matches, lost one, and now it's important to give everything to reach the next round."

Captain Joshua Kimmich echoed his coach's assessment, admitting Ecuador showed greater desire, particularly after the break.

"The difference was today that our opponent wanted to win more than us," Kimmich said. "You could really feel it, especially in the second half. That's why they won, and it was fully deserved."

Kimmich also warned that Germany must improve defensively if they are to remain in the tournament.

"We keep inviting the opposition back into the game with our turnovers, and that only makes them stronger," he said. "Fortunately, nothing has happened yet, but we can't afford another defeat. We can't concede one or two goals in every game. We have to reduce the number of times we give the ball away, then we can beat anyone."

Germany will face one of the third-placed wildcard qualifiers from Groups A, B, C, D or F in the Round of 32 at Boston Stadium on 29 June, while Ecuador head into the knockout stage with confidence after one of their biggest World Cup victories.
