Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz calls for defensive overhaul after Siwelele win

The Soweto giants secured their latest Betway Premiership victory through goals from Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba, but Da Cruz was far from satisfied with what he saw defensively.

Chiefs created numerous opportunities during the match but were unable to turn their dominance into a more comfortable victory, allowing Siwelele to remain within touching distance until the final whistle.

"In the first half, we created a lot of chances, but we didn't score enough and in the second half we had two chances and score two goals, so we have an issue about that," Da Cruz told SuperSport after the game.

The French coach believes the defensive problems need to be addressed quickly, particularly the number of opportunities Chiefs are allowing their opponents.

"We need to work a lot on our defensive part to not give chances to the opponent."

While Chiefs managed to claim all three points, Da Cruz admitted that his team's inability to be more clinical in both penalty areas remains a concern.

"We created a lot of chances, but we didn't score so after that you can make mistakes because you're not enough killer in the two boxes as either offensively and defensively," he added.

Da Cruz was particularly critical of the mentality and organisation within his defensive unit, suggesting that Chiefs need greater leadership and personality at the back if they are to become more consistent.

"We have a lack of leadership, lack of character in our defensive line, a lack of personality in our defensive line so we need to correct that and work a lot."

The victory will nevertheless provide Chiefs with a much-needed boost as they look to build momentum in the league. Amakhosi are currently third on the log standings with 11 points after five games.
