Lamine Yamal faces legal scrutiny over dwarfism entertainment at private party

The 18-year-old, considered one of the brightest young talents in world football, celebrated his birthday on Sunday at a rented estate in Olivella, northwest of Barcelona. The event, attended by influencers, YouTubers, and several Barcelona teammates, has drawn attention not for the guest list - but for the type of entertainment involved.

According to the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE), Yamal's hiring of performers with dwarfism was "unacceptable in the 21st century," accusing the move of perpetuating discriminatory stereotypes. The group has formally filed a complaint.

Spain's Directorate General for People with Disabilities confirmed to BBC Sport that it has passed the matter to the country's Prosecutor's Office, asking for a full investigation to determine whether any disability rights laws were violated.

"Shows or recreational activities in which people with disabilities are used to provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision are prohibited," the Ministry stated, citing the general law on disability rights. "These actions may violate current legislation and fundamental ethical values in a society that strives for dignity and equality."

The controversy has raised ethical questions surrounding Yamal's off-field decisions and put a spotlight on the responsibilities of high-profile athletes in public and private life.

However, not all parties agree with the criticism. Speaking anonymously to Spanish broadcaster RAC1, one of the entertainers present at the event defended both the performance and Yamal.

"No one disrespected us. We worked in peace," the entertainer said. "We are normal people doing legal work. We know our limits - we're not fairground monkeys. We danced, did magic, served drinks. Everyone had a good time."

The entertainer said their performance lasted about an hour, after which they stayed to join the party as guests.

Barcelona, when contacted by BBC Sport, declined to comment on what it deemed a "private matter," though a spokesperson noted that the club would reassess its position once "concrete information" is available.

While the matter remains under investigation, the incident has stirred wider debate over the role of disability, consent, and representation in entertainment-and put Yamal in the midst of an unexpected controversy during a critical period in his rising career.
