According to reports, Libyan giants Al Ittihad SC - the club that recently signed Thembinkosi Lorch - are targeting Mokwena following the departure of their coach, Khaled Ben Yahia. Ben Yahia parted ways with the club on Tuesday evening, with an official statement expected shortly.
Speaking to WinWin, as reported by Kickoff, Al Ittihad CEO Abdulmajid Saleh confirmed the decision: "The club's management decided to end the contract with the Tunisian coach by mutual agreement, despite the positive results.
"However, the team's performances under him did not meet the ambitions of the board and its large fanbase. We encountered no difficulty in terminating the contract with the well-mannered coach, as his deal was due to expire in four months' time. We thank him for the period he spent leading the technical staff."
Saleh also indicated that Mokwena is on their radar: "We have begun talks with a number of candidates to take over the technical role, including South African coach Rulani Mokwena. At present, Moaz Abboud has taken charge of the team until the new coach arrives."
If the move materialises, Mokwena could once again work alongside Lorch, who he coached during his time in South African football.
The appointment would mark another step in Mokwena's growing reputation across the continent, following his current spell at MC Alger.
