Man City midfielder Rodri faces race to be fit after surgery

The Spain international had been dealing with back discomfort for some time before deciding to have the procedure, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

City said in a statement: "The midfielder had been feeling discomfort for some time but has now undergone a procedure to address the issue and will now begin a short period of rehabilitation."

The club did not say how long the recovery is expected to take, although reports in Britain suggest the 30-year-old could miss the opening matches of the Premier League campaign, which begins on August 21.

Rodri has once again underlined his importance on the biggest stage after captaining Spain to 2026 FIFA World Cup glory earlier this month. He was also named the tournament's best player, adding to the Ballon d'Or award he won in 2024.

The midfielder has become one of the most influential players in world football since joining Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019. His ability to control matches has made him a key figure during the club's most successful era.

During his time at City, Rodri has won four Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Super Cup. He also scored the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final, helping City complete a historic treble.

His performances have earned him major individual honours, including the Ballon d'Or and the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season award.

Rodri has also built a reputation for his remarkable consistency. At one stage, Manchester City went 52 consecutive Premier League matches without defeat while he was in the side, highlighting his value to the team.

The midfielder has one year remaining on his current contract and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. For now, however, his focus will be on recovering quickly and returning to action as Manchester City prepare for another demanding season.
