Matthias Ginter commits future to Freiburg with new deal

Freiburg confirmed on Tuesday that the 32-year-old centre-back has extended his stay, although the length of the new deal has not been disclosed.

Ginter has been an important figure for Freiburg since returning to the club in 2022, and sporting director Jochen Saier believes his experience and consistency remain valuable to the team.

"Matze is a key figure in our team," Saier said. "The quality and consistency of his performances have been hugely impressive, and he's played an important role in the team's development.

"Even after so many years in professional football, Matze is still as driven and ambitious as ever. We're delighted that he'll be staying with us."

Ginter began his career at Freiburg and made his Bundesliga debut for the club in January 2012. He moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2014 before joining Borussia Monchengladbach three years later.

His return to Freiburg in 2022 brought him back to the club where his professional career began, and Ginter remains proud of the connection he has built with the team.

"SC has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I used to stand in the children's section at the Dreisamstadion," Ginter said.

"The way the club has developed since then has been incredible. We want to keep building on what we've achieved together and continue pushing ourselves."

Ginter has made 255 appearances for Freiburg, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists.

He will now continue his Freiburg journey when the club host FC Schalke at the Europa-Park-Stadion on Sunday, 11 October.
