Miguel Cardoso fears Aubrey Modiba blow ahead of Sundowns' CAF Champions League decider

Modiba was the hero at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, curling in a superb free kick to hand Sundowns a narrow 1-0 advantage in the first leg. However, his evening ended on a worrying note as he limped off late in the match with what appeared to be a hamstring injury - sustained without any contact.

The timing of the injury raises concern not only for Sundowns but also for South Africa national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"Let's see what will happen with Aubrey, but probably we will lose him," Cardoso admitted to the media after the match

"It comes from the strains and impact and effort that we were obliged to submit to in the last month."

Sundowns' demanding schedule has taken its toll, with the team playing seven Betway Premiership matches in just 21 days. Their domestic dominance is also under threat after a 3-2 loss to TS Galaxy in their final league outing, leaving their bid for an eighth consecutive title hanging in the balance.

They could still secure the crown if Orlando Pirates fail to beat Orbit College, but Sundowns' primary focus now shifts to continental glory.

Despite controlling large periods of the first leg, Masandawana were left ruing missed chances that could have given them a more comfortable cushion heading into the return leg at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

"Most important is that we know we can compete at this level with the best teams," Cardoso said.

"It was a wonderful game, we know we could have scored several times and the second goal would have been a more comfortable result.

"But it is clear we have to play for a victory in terms of scoring over there."

With away goals still a decisive factor in the competition, a goal in Rabat would significantly strengthen Sundowns' position, forcing AS FAR to score at least three times.

"It is an advantage the team needs to fight for. It will be a tough match, as this one was," Cardoso added.

The first leg was briefly disrupted at the start of the second half due to a malfunction in the VAR system, but both sides agreed to proceed without it.

"At the beginning of the second half it was difficult for both teams to pick up the pace. After that we played a beautiful second half. We fought for the goal that could give us more comfort, but it was not possible. But it was a wonderful performance - we saw Sundowns at the highest level and it was beautiful to see."
