Miguel Cardoso proud despite Mamelodi Sundowns' exit at FIFA Club World Cup

Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Brazilian giants Fluminense in their final Group F clash in Miami on Wednesday, a result that left the South African champions third in the group on four points - just one behind the Brazilians and two adrift of group winners Borussia Dortmund.

While elimination was a bitter pill to swallow, Cardoso praised his team's efforts, highlighting the growth and recognition the club has gained on the world stage.

"Some teams came here and took nothing, but Mamelodi Sundowns leave with a lot," Cardoso said during the post-match press conference, as quoted by Sowetan.

"We earned four points - we beat Ulsan, lost narrowly to Dortmund, and dominated Fluminense despite the draw. We return home with our heads held high. We've grown stronger through this experience. Even though we didn't advance, we've gained prestige, global recognition, and shown the quality of our players. I'm proud."

The sentiment was echoed by striker Arthur Sales, who emphasized the importance of building on this experience in the coming season.

"We're going to be stronger next season. The Club World Cup taught us many lessons, and now we have to show the world why we were there," said Sales.

Sales also heaped praise on fellow Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro, who delivered standout performances during the tournament. Ribeiro's spectacular goal against Dortmund drew international acclaim, while his assist for Iqraam Rayners' winner against Ulsan further underlined his value to the team.

"It's hard to put into words what Lucas brings. He's not just a top player, he's a top person," said Sales. "He's got an incredible personality - always positive, always joking - and then he steps on the pitch and shows that he's on another level. He inspires us."

Despite their early exit, Sundowns have made their mark at the Club World Cup, and their focus now shifts to translating those lessons into success back home and in future continental competitions.
