Paulinho's extra-time strike sends Palmeiras past Botafogo in Club World Cup thriller

The all-Brazilian affair began cautiously, as both sides sized each other up. Palmeiras enjoyed the lion's share of possession and fashioned the first clear-cut chance inside 10 minutes, when Vitor Roque failed to convert a pinpoint cross from Joaquin Piquerez.

Despite their dominance, the São Paulo side were frustrated throughout normal time, notably having an Estevao goal ruled out for offside in the 49th minute.

Botafogo, resilient in defence during the first half, began to look increasingly frantic as Palmeiras intensified their attacking pressure.

Their goalkeeper, John Victor, was outstanding, making a series of vital saves - including a superb stop from Mauricio in the 72nd minute and a reflex effort to deny Richard Ríos in extra time.

The breakthrough came ten minutes into the added period. Paulinho's effort from the edge of the box took a crucial deflection off Botafogo defender Alexander Barboza, wrong-footing Victor and nestling into the net.

There was late drama as Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gomez received a second yellow card for an off-the-ball incident, reducing his side to ten men. Botafogo nearly capitalised, with Vitinha volleying a cross narrowly into the side netting.

Colombian midfielder Richard Ríos was influential throughout, dictating play and keeping Botafogo's defence under constant pressure.

Ultimately, it was Palmeiras' persistence that prevailed, booking their place in the quarter-finals and extending their continental pedigree on the global stage.
